FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's and women's tennis teams are opening dual match play against Rider University tomorrow, September 11, on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts at 2pm.
Last year, the Stags swept the Broncs on the Rider Campus Courts in Lawrenceville, N.J.
On the men's side,
Ian Tesmond defeated Rollie Malfitano, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Tesmond teamed up with
Cameron Amyot in doubles at the one spot taking the match, 8-0.
Dennis Zlobinsky played in the two spot and beat Drew Laverty in two straight without giving up a game. Duo Zlobinsky and
Ofir Solomon started the day with a win over Laverty and Matt DiMartino, 8-2.
For the women, the three-time MAAC Player of the Year
Monica Yajima defeated Marly Roche, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. In doubles, the duo of Yajima and
Allison Radde defeated Rider duo Roche and Michelle Caravaglio, 8-4. In No. 2 singles,
Sharissa Ryan matched up against Caravaglio and came away with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
The women's team opened their season last weekend at the Sacred Heart Doubles Festival. Tomorrow's match will be the first of the season for the men's team.
After tomorrow's contest, the tennis teams will continue on the road. The men's team will return to the courts in Flushing, N.Y. to compete in the USTA Invitational on September 20, while the women's team returns in Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in the Saint Joseph's Invitational on September 27.
