Women's Soccer Opens 2013 Campaign With Pair Of We

The Fairfield University women's soccer team begins its 2013 campaign on Friday evening, travelling to West Point, N.Y. to take on the Black Knights of Army. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Clinton Field, with GameTracker available courtesy of Army.

The Stag and Cadets will be meeting for the seventh time, with the Army winning four of those meetings, including two straight. The series began in 1993, a 3-1 Black Knights win at West Point in 1993. The following season the Stags fell 4-3 at home, before winning for the first time, 5-1, on the road in 1995. After an 11-year hiatus the series resume in 2006 with a 2-1 Stags win at the Army hosted BAE Systems Tournament. Army won 1-0 at Fairfield in 2010 and 2-1 in 2009, the last time the squads played at Clinton Field.

Fairfield is 8-11-2 in season opening games, with its last season opening win coming 1-0 over Bryant in 2010. The Stags have played five overtime games on opening day, the last a 1-0 loss at Central Connecticut to open the 2005 season. The last time Fairfield played an opening day game to a draw was in 2003, 1-1, at Colorado College. The Stags have started a season with multiple wins on six occasions, beginning 5-0-1 in 1994.

The Stags continue their four-game season opening road trip at Wagner, Sunday at 1 p.m. It is the Stags first visit to Staten Island since 2002. Wagner is offering both video and livestats on its website for the contest.

Fairfield and Wagner are meeting for the fifth time, with the Stags winning all four previous meetings. Fairfield won the inaugural contest, in 1993, 13-0, and was 7-0 victors when the teams met in 2003, with both games in Fairfield. The squads played last season, at Fairfield, with a 1-0 Stag victory, equaling the closest margin in the series, a 3-2 double-overtime win at Wagner in 2002.
