Fairfield 9, Saint Peter's 1
Fairfield 3, Saint Peter's 0

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Sammy Ruffolo picked up three hits and four RBI to lead the Fairfield University softball team to a sweep of Saint Peter's University in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader. The victories improved Fairfield's overall record to 17-15 and its MAAC slate to 5-3.

The Stags started the day quickly by putting up four runs in the first inning of game one. The first run came home when the catcher missed home plate on a force play, allowing Kristen Filicia to score an unearned run. Nicole Capta made it a 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly to right field, sending home Lauren Liseth. Pitcher Rae Ball brought home the next two runs with a line-drive single to center field, padding the lead to 4-0.

Amber Velasquez hit a solo home run over the left field fence to put the Peacocks on the scoreboard, the team's only run of the day. Fairfield answered with three more runs in the third inning.  Kristen Filicia chased home the first two runs with a bases-loaded single for a 6-0 lead. Ruffolo pushed home the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Fairfield added a single run in the fourth inning, courtesy of a solo home run from Sam Frungillo, and in the sixth inning, off a single to right field by Ball. Ball picked up her seventh win of the season by going the distance and allowing one run on seven hits with two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Stags also scored in the first inning with a single run. Kristen Filicia led the inning off with a triple to right field, and came home on Ruffolo's single to left field. She stole second to put herself in scoring position, but was stranded there after two strikeouts and a fly ball to center field.

The lead improved to 3-0 with two more runs in the second inning. Breanna Levick reached first base with a single up the middle and was sacrificed to second by Nikki Osofsky. Kristen Filicia was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Both runners would score off Ruffolo's triple to left field.

The Peacocks would manage just three hits against starting pitcher Rebecca Trott, who fanned six batters and walked four to earn her ninth win of the season.

The Stags will host Manhattan College in a key MAAC doubleheader on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
