Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. – The Fairfield University volleyball team's postseason run has come to a close with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-17) loss to eighth-seeded Nebraska in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Championship this evening in front of a crowd of 7,920 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Stags finish the season with a 19-13 overall record.
Junior
Marilyn Peizer led the Stags with 10 kills, including the 500th of her career.
Three-time MAAC Setter of the Year
Rachel Romansky closed out her career with 22 assists, two digs, and two kills against the Huskers. She finishes her career with 4,552 assists, good for second all-time at Fairfield, and 1,132 digs, ninth all-time. Romansky is only the second Stag in program history to record more than 4,000 assists and 1,000 digs in a career. She also became the only setter in league history to earn MAAC Setter of the Year honors in three consecutive seasons.
Senior middle blocker
Hayley Moyer recorded four kills in her final game as a Stag. She finishes her career seventh all-time in block assists (218), tenth all-time in total blocks (241), and seventh in attack percentage (.282) at Fairfield.
Sophomore
Maddie FitzPatrick and
Caitlin Stapleton had three kills apiece against Nebraska. Sophomore
Hadley Orr had eight digs and three kills. Libero
Carsen Mata had nine digs while junior
Camille Coffey had seven digs.
The Stags gave the Huskers a run to start the first set. Nebraska notched the first three points of the night but Romansky stopped the run with a kill while Orr followed with a kill of her own. After a Nebraska error made it 6-5, Coffey delivered an ace to things up at 6-6. The Huskers committed two more errors to put the Stags ahead, 8-6. A quick 6-1 run by Nebraska shifted the momentum as the Nebraska went on to the 25-15 win.
Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the first set on a kill by Peizer but the Huskers countered with a 4-0 run. Romansky stopped the run with a kill while Peizer then cut the gap to 5-3 with another kill. After a kill by Moyer made it 11-6, Nebraska countered with a 14-3 run to close out the set.
The Huskers (24-6) took a 4-0 lead to start the third set. The Stags hung around, pulling within 6-4 after Nebraska attack error. Nebraska countered with a 6-2 run to pull away from the Stags. Fairfield closed the gap to 13-10 after a kill by Peizer. The Huskers returned their lead to six points, 18-12, on a kill by Big Ten Player of the Year Kelsey Robinson. The Stags answered with consecutive points to make it 18-14 but Nebraska fended off Fairfield for the 25-17 win.
Fairfield held Robinson to just six kills on the night. Defensively, Robinson contributed 12 digs and four total blocks.
