Ayris' Goal Lifts Men's Soccer To 2-1 Win Over Marist In OT

Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Jordan Ayris scored the game-winning goal just minutes into the first overtime as the Fairfield University men's soccer team posted a 2-1 win over Marist College on the road. The victory improved the Stags overall record to 8-5-2 and also represented the team's fifth win in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play.

Fairfield controlled the first half, spending most of the period in the offensive third of the pitch. The Stags had several opportunities but none was better than Reco McLaren's chance late in the half. The senior found open space inside the box and attacked the goal. Marist's goalkeeper came off his line and was able to deflect McLaren's shot which kept the game scoreless. The two teams went into the locker room tied at 0-0 despite the Stags holding a 6-2 edge in shots.

The game remained scoreless until midway through the second half when Daniel Shaw made his mark on the game. After an initial shot was deflected by the goalkeeper, Shaw was able to collect the rebound and send a shot back toward the goal that beat the goalkeeper for a 1-0 edge.

Shaw's goal appeared to be the difference in the game until Gerry Ceja tied the game with under three minutes remaining in regulation. Despite the sudden strike, Fairfield was still able to regroup in the first overtime. The Stags used an aggressive start to win a corner kick just minutes into extra time. Jake Zuniga stood over the corner and sent a cross into the center of the box. Ayris finished the shot with a header to send the Stags to victory.
