LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Fairfield University volleyball team went undefeated during the month of October and has started the month of the November the same way. The Stags downed Rider University 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-23) to win their 11th straight match and remain tied atop the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings.
Fairfield is 14-11 overall and is 11-3 in MAAC play, tying them Manhattan College for first place with four league matches remaining in the regular season.
Senior
Rachel Romansky had her 12th double-double of the season with 27 assists and 15 digs to go along with seven kills on .545 hitting. Junior
Marilyn Peizer extended her double-digit kills streak to 10 matches, finishing with 12 kills in addition to seven digs, three assists, a block, and an ace. Junior
Caitlin Stapleton add 10 kills and three total blocks.
Carsen Mata had 21 digs while
Camille Coffey had nine digs, three assists, an ace, and a kill. Freshman
Bella Guanciale added seven digs.
Senior
Hayley Moyer had six kills and three total blocks, two of which were solo. Junior
Lindsay Weaver had four kills, eight digs, and three total blocks. Freshman
Megan O'Sullivan had three kills.
The first set was close early, but the Stags took control at the midway point, going on an impressive 7-2 run to open up a 20-15 advantage. Fairfield rolled to the 25-20 win.
The Stags opened up a 21-15 lead in the second set but the Broncs used a 4-0 run to pull within two points. Rider continued to hang around coming back to tie the frame, 23-23, on a kill by Bridget Sheerin. Romansky answered with a kill of her own to put the Stags on top 24-23. Sheerin tied the set once more with a kill but a block by Peizer and Weaver gave the Fairfield a 25-24 advantage. Peizer then delivered a service ace to send the Stags into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Rider led much of the third set, taking a 22-19 advantage. Fairfield did not back down as Stapleton ignited a crucial 5-0 run with a kill. The run was capped off with back-to-back kills by Romansky which put Fairfield ahead, 24-22. After a Broncs point, Moyer ended the match with a kill.
Fairfield's current 11-match winning streak is tied for the sixth-longest in program history. The last time Fairfield won 11 or more consecutive matches was during the 2006 season when the Stags rattled off 20 straight wins.
Fairfield returns to Alumni Hall for the final time next weekend. The Stags host Manhattan in a crucial match on November 9. Iona College visits Alumni Hall on November 10 which will be streamed live on
MAAC.tv. Prior to Sunday's match, the Stags will honor their senior class.
