FAIRFIELD, Conn. - They say all good things must come to an end. Unfortunately for the Fairfield University volleyball team, it means their 12-match winning streak was snapped by Iona College. The Stags fell 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 25-19, 8-15) on Senior Day at Alumni Hall.
In her final home match as a Stag, senior Hayley Moyer posted a season-high 14 kills on .303 hitting with two blocks. Senior Rachel Romansky also made the most of her final appearance in Alumni Hall by posting her 13th double-double of the season with 50 assists and 14 digs.
Junior Marilyn Peizer tallied a career-high 20 kills along with 11 digs for her third career double-double. Sophomore Hadley Orr had 11 kills and five digs. Defensively, Carsen Mata tallied 25 digs while Camille Coffey notched a season-high 22 digs.
Fairfield came out strong in the first set, posting four straight points. Iona cut into the lead several times, pulling within a point each time. The Gaels made it 18-17 on a kill by McKenzie Humann but Orr answered with a kill of her own to spark a set-winning 7-1 run.
Iona trailed 16-15 in the second set when four consecutive Fairfield errors tipped the momentum in the Gaels' favor. Iona evened the match, 1-1, with the 25-19 win. The Stags jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the third set but the Gaels countered with a 5-0 run to take the lead. A kill by Orr tied it at 8-8, but the Gaels went on a 7-2 run and never looked back in the 25-18 win.
Fairfield regrouped in the fourth set, storming out to an 11-3 lead and rolling to the 25-19 win to force a fifth set. In the deciding set, the Stags jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Gaels used a 5-1 run of their own to tie the set, 6-6. Fairfield took an 8-7 lead after an Iona error but the Gaels closed out the match on an 8-0 run.
Four Gaels recorded double-doubles. Alicja Pawelec had 20 kills and 15 digs while Catrina Warren posted 11 kills and 20 digs. Natalie Ziskin had 47 assists and 16 digs while Taylor Cembalisty had 13 kills and 12 digs.
It is the first time in program history in which Iona has defeated Fairfield twice during the regular season and only the second time since 1986 in which the Gaels posted two wins over Fairfield at any time during the year. In addition, it is the first time Iona has been victorious in Alumni Hall since 2002.
With the loss, Fairfield moves 15-11 overall and into a second-place tie with a 12-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record. Iona keeps their MAAC Championship tournament hopes alive as it improves to 12-5 in the league and 15-11 overall.
Fairfield will wrap-up the regular season next weekend, traveling to Niagara University on November 16 and Canisius College on November 17. The 2013 MAAC Championships will be held, November 23-24, at Siena College.
