FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- With the non-conference schedule tucked away for another year, the Fairfield University men's soccer team will look toward the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) portion of the 2013 slate. The Stags open conference play by hosting Monmouth University on Saturday night, which will have plenty of historic significance. Game time is 7 pm at Lessing Field.
On the Fairfield side, Head Coach
Carl Rees will try for his 100th career MAAC victory, checking into this game with a 99-38-12 record through 17-plus seasons. On the Monmouth side, the Hawks will be playing their first MAAC game, joining the conference over the summer. Since 2006, these two teams have combined for seven NCAA tournament appearances.
Fairfield plays its third straight home game by hosting Monmouth University. The team split the first two games of the home stand, defeating UMass Lowell before falling to LIU Brooklyn. The Stags own a 3-2-1 overall record after falling to LIU Brooklyn by a 2-1 count. Reco McLaren scored the team's lone goal, his third goal in the last two games. He leads the team in scoring with seven points, netting three goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Joe Martin continues to impress as a freshman, posting a 1.45 goals against average with a .743 save percentage.
Monmouth brings a 1-5-2 overall record into tonight's game following a 1-0 setback against Central Connecticut. The team has five different goal scorers this year, all with one goal each. Tomas Penfold's was the game winner in the team's 2-1 overtime win against Villanova. He scored just 37 seconds into the first overtime. David Acuna Camacho ranks first among his teammates with three points, coming off a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Stephen Graziani owns a 1.61 goals against average with a .643 save percentage.
Following this game, Fairfield will return to the road for one game, heading to Manhattan College for an October 9 game before returning to Lessing Field on October 12 for a match up with Canisius College. Fairfield's final 10 games of the season will come against MAAC opponents.
