Men's Tennis Hits the Road this Weekend for the Qu

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's tennis team will have a split squad this weekend as they compete in both the Quinnipiac Invitational and the Columbia Invitational.

Last year, the Stags competed in the Columbia Invitational but have not competed in the Quinnipiac Invitational since 2011.

During last year's Columbia Invitational, Ian Tesmond and partner Erik Kremheller advanced to the finals of Flight A doubles. The duo picked up wins over Fordham and St. John's but fell to Cornell in the final.

Ofir Solomon went 1-1 in Flight B singles. Solomon had a victory over Fairleigh Dickinson's Ibrahim Shams, 6-2, 6-2, but on day two, he went up against one seed Quoc-Daniel Nguyen and fell 6-1, 6-2; Nguyen went on to win the draw. Cameron Amyot performed well in the consolation bracket in Flight C singles. He finished the weekend 2-2 coming away with wins against Columbia's Eric Jacobs and Fordham's Peder Gram.

In the 2011 Quinnipiac Invitational, Tesmond competed in the 'A' singles bracket. Tesmond defeated two opponents before falling in the semifinals to UConn's Scott Warden in a close match, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8. In the Flight B singles, Amyot had a victory over Quinnipiac's Corey Morgenstern followed by a tough loss to Boston University's Teran, 4-6, 6-4, 10-3. Teran went on to win the 'B' singles bracket.

Both Bjorn Merinder and R.J. Mirabile competed in the 'C' singles bracket at the Quinnipiac Invitational. Both Merinder and Mirabile came up short in their opening round matches but Merinder made his way to the finals of the 'C' consolation bracket.

After this weekend, the Stags (1-0) have two more competitions left in the fall season. Fairfield will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional on October 17-20 and the Connecticut State Championships on October 25-27.
