NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- Despite a long bus trip and a steady rain throughout the game, the Fairfield University men's soccer team overcame an early deficit to post a 2-1 overtime win at Niagara University on Saturday afternoon. The victory pushed Fairfield to 5-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 record, giving the team seven points in the MAAC standings.

Senior Reco McLaren provided the offense in this victory, scoring a goal in the second half and another in overtime. But those goals were the result of strong play from James Taylor and Jon Clements as they made critical passes to set up McLaren's heroics.

The Purple Eagles and the Stags played to a scoreless draw in the opening half as the teams played evenly through the 45-minute session. Both squads took three shots and set up two corner kicks in the half, but neither side could capitalize on those opportunities.

In the second half, Niagara broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute when Jack Welsh scored his first goal of the season, which was set up by a pass from Ken Cooper. Fairfield scored the equalizer 11 minutes later following a brilliant play from Taylor. After quick combination passing, Taylor created the scoring chance with an outstanding pass that freed McLaren in the box. The senior gained a step on his defender and hit a volley into the net that tied the score at 1-1.

"We tied the game with possibly our best goal of the season," Head Coach Carl Rees said. "The goal was a result of an excellent delivery by James (Taylor) and a strong finish by Reco (McLaren)."

The game-winner came just five minutes into the first overtime as a change in tactics was responsible for the deciding play.

"We made a tactical shuffle that played Jon (Clements) in a more advanced role," Rees said. "His header sent the ball past the last Niagara defender allowing Reco to end the game. I'm very proud of the manner in which our team worked to overcome a resilient Niagara squad. I would especially like to praise James Taylor who played a vital role both on defense and linking in attack. He worked tirelessly throughout the game. Defensively, Martin Lindgren also deserved recognition for his play today."

The Stags will host Siena College in its next game which takes place on Wednesday night at Lessing Field. The game is slated for a 7 pm start. The contest will be the first of two straight home games as Fairfield will host Rider University on October 26.
