FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Several Stags from the Fairfield University men's and women's tennis teams will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals this weekend. On the men's side,
Ian Tesmond,
Dennis Zlobinsky,
Cameron Amyot, and
Ofir Solomon will travel to New Haven, Conn. to compete on October 17-20.
Tesmond has competed in three ITA Regionals as a Stag. In this year's competition he will be competing in both singles and doubles play. Zlobinsky has also competed in three ITA Regionals as a Stag and will be competing in doubles play paired with Tesmond. This will be Amyot's second appearance at an ITA Regional competition, where he will be competing in doubles play. This year's competition will be Solomon's debut at an ITA Regional competition, where he will compete in qualifying singles and in doubles play paired with Amyot.
Last year in men's singles, Tesmond matched up against Ibrahim Shams in the first round but after a back-and-forth first set, came up short 7-6, 6-2. Zlobinsky went 1-1 during the tournament. He beat MJ Every from St. John's in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, but fell to Boston University's Chanon Varapongsittikul, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Fairfield started strong with two victories. Tesmond and Zlobinsky paired up and defeated a duo from Hofstra, 8-5, to advance. In the second round, they faced MAAC foe Niagara but fell, 9-8.
Erik Kremheller and Amyot came out on top of St. Bonaventure's Yanez and Guevara, 8-4, in the first round. With an unlucky draw, the pair was then matched up against No. 1 seeded Nguyen and Hu from the Ivy League's Harvard. Fairfield fell to the Crimson doubles team, 8-3.
After this weekend, the men's tennis team will have just one tournament left in their fall seasons. The men's team will return to New Haven, Conn. for the Connecticut State Championships on October 25-27.
