FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University volleyball team won their fourth straight match with a 3-1 (25-11, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23) victory of Canisius College this afternoon at Alumni Hall. Senior Rachel Romansky also made a little history for the Stags as she recorded her 1,000th career dig and 4,000th career assist.
Romansky finished the day with 45 assists and 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. She registered her both her historic dig and historic assist in the second set of the day to become only the second Stag in program history to record more than 1,000 digs and 4,000 assists in a career. Romansky now has 4,026 assists and 1,010 digs in her 110-match career.
Juniors Caitlin Stapleton and Marilyn Peizer paced the Stags with 14 kills apiece. Stapleton added three digs while Peizer hit .324 on the day and tallied three aces, setting a new career-high, four digs and a block.
Senior Hayley Moyer added a season-high 12 kills on .400 hitting with three total blocks. Sophomore Maddie FitzPatrick tied season-highs with six kills and three total blocks.
Defensively, the Stags posted 83 digs on the day. Red-shirt senior Carsen Mata had a career-high 28 digs, including the 800th of her career. Sophomore transfer Hadley Orr had 14 digs to go along with nine kills. Junior Lindsay Weaver tallied a career-high 11 digs while Camille Coffey added 10 digs.
Fairfield (7-11; 5-3 MAAC) dominated the first set, hitting .531 with 17 kills and no errors in 32 attempts en route to the 25-11 win. In the second set, Canisius (6-13; 4-4 MAAC) chipped away at a five-point deficit to pull within 19-18 on a solo block by Grace Streicher. Fairfield countered with a 6-1 run to close out the frame and take a 2-0 lead.
There were nine ties and four lead changes in the third set. With the score tied at 21-21, the Griffs' Rachel Kline broke the stalemate with a kill while Katlyn Tyler made it 23-21 with an ace. Canisius fought off the Stags for the 25-23 win.
In the fourth set, Canisius stormed out to a 17-9 lead. Fairfield would not be deterred as a pair of aces by Romansky helped spark some life into the Stags. Behind an impressive 10-2 run, the Stags would tie the frame, 19-19, on a kill by Stapleton. The Stags took a 22-21 lead on a kill by Orr and would not trail the rest of the way in the 25-23 win.
For the Griffs, Kline finished with 12 kills and 12 digs while Streicher had 21 assists and 10 digs.
