Men's Soccer Hosts Canisius In MAAC Matchup Saturd

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team will host Canisius College on Saturday night at 7 pm as the two teams battle for position in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings. The game will be available to watch via the web through MAAC.tv. Fans can also follow the game via Fairfield livestats. Saturday night's game promotion features Favorite Jersey Night which entitles any fan wearing their favorite FIFA or MLS jersey to a $1 ticket.

The Stags are coming off a 5-2 setback against Manhattan College on the road, the team's first road game since defeating the University of Massachusetts on September 18. Following this weekend's game, Fairfield will play a pair of road games against conference foes, namely Iona on October 16 and Niagara on October 19.

But the team is focused on this Saturday when it will play a solid Canisius team that brings a 5-3-2 overall record into the game, and is one of four teams tied for first place in the conference standings with a 1-0-1 MAAC mark. The Stags look to improve on their 3-3-2 overall record and their 0-1-1 conference slate.

The Stags offense has performed well this season, averaging better than 1.5 goals per game. Fairfield has scored in all eight of its games this season and is the only MAAC school to not be shutout this year. The team has scored two or more goals in four of its eight games, including a season-high three against UMass Lowell on September 24. Reco McLaren, who led the team in scoring a year ago, took over the team lead in scoring with seven points, picking up an assist against Manhattan on Wednesday night. Freshman Joe Martin has played every minute of the 2013 season in the Fairfield goal, posting a 1.34 goals against average with a pair of shutouts.

Canisius comes off a 4-2 win over Marist College in its last outing, giving the Golden Griffs a 3-0-1 mark over their last four games. Two of those three wins were against non-conference opponents, beating Detroit and St. Bonaventure before tying Manhattan. Will Hudson is the team's top scorer with nine points, registering four goals and one assist. Ryan Arvin has seen most of the minutes in the Canisius goal with a 1.07 goals against average and three shutouts.
