Box Score ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --
Jordan Ayris scored his first goal of the 2012 campaign, but it was not enough for the men's soccer team to overcome the University of Denver as the Stags dropped a 2-1 decision on the second day of the Lobo Invitational.
Ayris' goal gave the Stags an early lead as the sophomore secured a deflection off a challenged pass that landed at the forward's feet. Ayris took the shot from mid-range and beat the goalkeeper in the 12th minute. The Stags lead would hold for about 15 minutes until Denver's Malcolm Harris was also the beneficiary of a deflected pass which he one-timed into the Fairfield goal to make it a 1-1 game with 17 minutes left in the opening half.
The game was decided early in the second half when Brian Hoyt collected a Fairfield goal kick and sent the ball back toward goal, finding the back of the net in the 52nd minute. The Stags had three opportunities in the final 10 minutes off shots from
Reco McLaren,
Jon Clements, and
John Martinez but none of those attempts resulted in the tying goal.
Denver outshot the Stags by a 19-12 count with Fairfield goalkeeper
Michael O'Keeffe making seven saves on the afternoon. Goalkeeper Oliver Brown was forced to make four saves for Denver.
