FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team put forth another collective effort on the pitch this afternoon as the Stags posted a 3-0 win over Canisius University. The soccer program also honored their graduate students and seniors prior to the match with a ceremony.
The victory provided the Stags with their ninth overall and seventh in the Metro Conference, keeping them firmly situated at the top of the conference standings.
The offense was relentless throughout the match, placing a season-best 22 shots toward goal while the defense was dominating by only two shots in the match which came in the closing minutes.
Pipeloore Olanrewaju and
Asher Rosen produced all of the scoring offense the Stags would need against the Griffs. Olanrewaju scored the team's first and third goals while Rosen accounted for the second. And, both student-athletes added an assist to their point total on the afternoon.
Goalkeepers
Evan Chomow and
Shayan Rad combined for the team's sixth shutout of the season. Rad faced both of Canisius' shot attempts but was not forced to make a save.
The Stags pushed forward and applied pressure to the Canisius back line, keeping possession in Fairfield's offensive third for most of the first 20 minutes. Fairfield posted the first four shots of the game, one of which came off the foot of
Alex Vaz that bounced off the cross bar in the 11
th minute.
Just two minutes later, Olanrewaju was able to secure the ball from a Canisius defender and sent a shot to the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead. Fairfield would add one more shot in the first half, a volley from
Cameron Gerber from the left side of the box that required Schantz's attention.
The second half could not have started any better for the Stags as they took the ball at the start and moved down the pitch. Olanrewaju worked the ball from the left side to the top of the box and sent a shot that forced the goalkeeper to fully extend just to get a hand on the ball. Rosen was waiting for the rebound and did not disappoint by putting the ball into the lower corner just 22 seconds into the half.
Fairfield closed out the scoring in the 54
th minute with Rosen returning the favor. The senior collected the ball at the top of the box, drew a defender and rolled a pass to Olanrewaju who one-timed the ball into the left corner to pad the lead to the three goals.
The Stags would finish the half with a 12-2 advantage in shots and placed four of those on net. Schantz finished the match with six saves while Chomow and Rad did not make a stop in their collective 90 minutes.
"Another collective effort by this team in consecutive games against Yale and Canisius," Head Coach
Krystian Witkowski said. "It's that type of effort that makes this team so special. I am really proud of the group. We also celebrate the seniors and graduate students for all they have done for us."
Fairfield will return to the road for its next match, an October 31 meeting with Niagara University.
