WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's cross country team opened the 2012 season with a second place finish at the Marist College Invitational while the women's team placed third this morning at Bowdoin Park.
 
Junior Howie Rosas placed third overall in the 5K race with a time of 16:33 while freshman Dan DeBlock posted a sixth-place finish in his first collegiate race, stopping the clock in 16:46.
 
Sophomore Connor Kelley posted a time of 16:55 to place eighth while junior John Lobo had a time of 16:56 to finish ninth. Senior Kyle Short finished in 17:04 while classmate Dylan Fisher rounded out the Stags' top-six in 17:26.
 
Junior Brian Cleary had a time of 17:50 while senior Greg Chase had a time of 18:02. Senior Matt Boley finished in 18:24 while freshman Frank Segreto had a time of 18:36 in his collegiate debut. Senior Ernie Lustenring finished in 21:13.
 
Marist's Ken Walshak won the event in 16:21 to help the Red Foxes to a team title. The Stags were second while Iona College was third.
 
On the women's side, sophomore Danielle Renzi placed seventh overall in the 5K event with a time of 20:38 while classmate Cate Forte was ninth in 20:49. Senior Meghan Sullivan posted a time of 20:56 while junior Hillary Maxson finished in 21:48.1. Rounding out Fairfield's top-six were junior Molly Leidig, who finished in 22:17 and sophomore Maggie MacKenzie who ran a 22:24.1 in her Stags debut.               
 
Also making her Stags debut was sophomore Kelsey Murphy who finished in 22:25. Junior Juli Bassett clocked a time of 22:26 while freshman Nora Garrity posted a time of 23:07 in her collegiate debut.
 
Marist's Michelle Gaye won the individual title and helped the Red Foxes to a team crown with 20 points. Iona was second with 55 points, edging out Fairfield by one point.
 
Fairfield returns to action on September 15 at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park.
