The Fairfield field hockey team is coming off their first winning season since joining the America East Conference, finishing with a 9-8 overall record. The Stags welcome back 14 letterwinners and add nine freshmen to the roster, all of whom look to make an immediate impact.
Now in her 18
th year as head coach,
Jackie Kane hopes to build on the success the program has had in the past few seasons and believes she has a team with the versatility on both ends to make a good run in the 2012 season.
“
Felicitas Heinen and
Valerie Buurma were huge for us last season despite it being their first year of college field hockey” Kane said. “They stepped in and helped stabilize our defense, complimenting the experience that we have with players like
Michelle Loor,
Hillary Fitts, and
Shealyn Testa.”
The senior leadership will be dispersed on the field with forward
Molly Caffrey, midfielder
Amanda Keller, defender Loor, and goalkeeper
Maddy Sposito. Sposito returns as the team's starting goalkeeper coming off her best season as a Stag. She posted a save percentage of .694 and ranked as high as 10
th in the National Field Hockey stats with a goals against average of 1.27 halfway through last season.
Fairfield will open up their season on the road against Hofstra University at 3pm. The Pride finished 2011 ranked No. 20 nationally, but lost four key starters in their lineup. They were 13-9 overall and will be led on the front half this year by senior forward Krizia Layne and on defense by seniors Codi Nyland and Kerry Kiddo. All three student-athletes started every game last season. Layne was second on the team with 53 points, breaking down to 20 goals and 13 assists. Nyland and Kiddoo held down the back half, with Kiddoo making four defensive saves in her junior campaign.
This Sunday, the Stags will face Bucknell University for the first time, in their season home opener at 1pm on University Field. The Bison are coming off an 8-12 season in the Patriot League and will play Connecticut in their season opener on Saturday prior to their matchup against the Stags.
