POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In a battle of last year's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship match, the Fairfield men's tennis team just couldn't get the singles wins to defeat Marist College. The Red Foxes defeated the Stags 4-3.
The day started off strong for the Stags, with all three doubles victories. At No. 1 doubles,
Dan Sauter and
Dennis Zlobinsky defeated Rossi and Himmelsbach 8-2. Other big wins came from Michalisin and
Erik Kremheller, and duo Tesmond and
Cameron Amyot. Fairfield easily clinched the lone doubles point giving them momentum into the singles matches.
Only two Stags were able to pull out wins during singles.
Ian Tesmond in the two spot, and
Joe Michalisin at No. 3 singles played tough matches but each pulled out a 2-0 performance against Marist. Both with three set matches, Tesmond defeated Van Eck , 6-7(5), 6-2, (10-5) and Michalisin beat Himmelscbach 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Unfortunately, Fairfield couldn't get another victory in which resulted in a 4-3 loss to the Red Foxes.
The Stags are now 9-4, 2-1 in the MAAC. Their next match will be across town against non-conference foe, Sacred Heart at 3pm on April 11.
