FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University baseball team split a doubleheader with Canisius College this afternoon in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Alumni Diamond. Canisius pulled out a 5-2 victory in the opener, but senior
Scott Warwick tossed a four-hit complete game shutout in the nightcap to lead the Stags to a 4-0 victory.
Warwick (3-3) threw 7.0 shutout innings and struck out a season-high nine batters. He scattered four hits and a walk. Warwick retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced, striking out five of those hitters. Devon Stewart (3-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and three walk with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings
Fairfield's offense helped Warwick early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back RBI singles by
Ryan Plourde and
Jack Giannini. The Stags added another run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by
Sebastian Salvo. Salvo also scored the Stags' fourth run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Canisius (23-21; 9-5 MAAC) did threaten in the top of the sixth inning, putting two on with one out, but Warwick was able to get out of the jam. He then retired the Griffs in order in the top of the seventh for the victory.
In the first game of the day, Fairfield (19-22; 7-7 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rookie
Alex Witkus made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly. In the top of the sixth inning, Canisius took advantage of four Fairfield errors pushed four runs across the plate to overtake the Stags, 4-2. The Griffs added another run in the eighth inning and rolled to the 5-2 victory.
Garrett Cortright (5-5) picked up the victory after allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and five walks in 6.2 innings. Jon Fitzsimmons picked up his tenth save of the season tossing a scoreless ninth. Rookie
EJ Ashworth (3-5) was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs, one earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings.
Kyle Capaldo through 1.2 innings of relief while
Chris Kalica got the final out of the eighth inning.
Tucker Panciera through an inning of scoreless relief, striking out one batter.
Plourde was a combined 3-for-5 on the day with two walks, an RBI, and a run scored.
Fairfield and Canisius finish out the series tomorrow, April 29, at 12pm on Alumni Diamond.
