Men's Basketball Prepares For MAAC Semifinal Game

Game Notes

Watch On ESPN3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The Fairfield University men's basketball team will play a semifinal game on Sunday afternoon when it takes on top-seeded Iona College. The game is slated for a 2 pm tip and is being streamed on ESPN3.

The Stags come off a 65-63 win over Rider University on Saturday afternoon, fighting off the Broncs down the stretch to win the quarterfinal game. Fairfield led by as many as 10 points in the contest, but Rider managed to fight back and climb within a point in the closing minute. However, Fairfield made free throws down the stretch which kept the Broncs from completing the comeback.

Rakim Sanders led all Fairfield scorers with 15 points, while Desmond Wade posted 12 points for the Stags. All of Wade's points came in the second half and all 12 markers came from beyond the three-point line. Sean Crawford and Jamel Fields paced the reserves with each scoring nine points in the game.

Iona advanced after knocking off eighth-seeded Marist College by an 87-63 margin to set up Sunday's showdown with the Stags. Mike Glover scored a game-high 29 points for Iona, while Scott Machado added 18 points and eight assists to support the cause.

The Gaels have won both meetings against Fairfield this year, including 77-72 decision in New Rochelle during the final weekend of the regular season. The winner of this match up will advance to the MAAC Tournament championship game on Monday, March 5. The title contest starts at 7 pm and will air on ESPN2.
