STAMFORD, Conn. - The Fairfield men's tennis team defeated Villanova with a 5-2 victory last night. Their sweep in doubles gave the Stags the momentum from the start.
"I thought we played well, and had good intensity in doubles," said Coach
Ed Paige.
Doubles victories came from the No. 1 duo
Ian Tesmond and
George Tioutine, defeating the Wildcats 8-5.
Mike Lessing and
Dan Sauter paired up, finishing first and defeating Villanova's Peyton and Rosengren 8-4.
Dominant performances in singles came from Tesmond and
Joe Michalisin. In the No. 5 spot, Michalisin defeated Tim Abbraciamento in a quick, 6-1, 6-0 match. Following Michalisin's finish, Tesmond who played No. 2 singles shut down Matt Colonnese from Villanova 6-4, 6-1.
After the Stags performance Coach Paige says "The talent is there and we just have to keep working hard."
Fairfield returns to the courts on February 25 when they travel to Easton, Penn. to play Lafayette.
