Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior libero
Kara Reis tied the program record for career digs as the Fairfield University volleyball team downed Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Siena College 3-1 (26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 25-18) this afternoon at Alumni Hall.
Reis finished with 22 digs on the afternoon to bring her career total to 1,674 digs, tying the program standard set by Lindsey Lee in 2007.
Fairfield (11-7; 6-2 MAAC), who avenged a loss to the Saints two weeks ago, presented a balanced attack with five Stags posting double figures. Sophomore
Caitlin Stapleton registered 12 kills on .429 hitting while senior
Brianna Dixion equaled Stapleton with 12 kills. Junior
Hayley Moyer along with sophomores
Camille Coffey and
Lindsay Weaver added 10 kills apiece. Moyer also contributed three total blocks while Weaver posted five total blocks and four digs. Coffey just missed a double-double, finishing with nine digs.
Junior
Rachel Romansky had her ninth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 11 digs. Romansky is three assists shy of the 3,000th of her career which would make her just the third Stag in program history to reach the milestone.
Sophomore
Marilyn Peizer notched a career-high 11 digs to go along with three blocks on the day while sophomore
Carsen Mata added nine digs.
Fairfield out-blocked Siena, 8-6, and held a 72-67 advantage in digs and a 58-53 advantage in kills. Siena's Colleen Ahearn recorded a match-high 17 kill while Taylor Akana recorded a double-double with 12 digs and 10 kills.
In the first set, Fairfield climbed back from a four-point deficit and tied the frame at 17-17 on a kill by Moyer. In typical Fairfield-Siena fashion, the two teams went back-and-forth until the score came to rest at 24-24 on a kill by Moyer. After a Siena attack error gave the Stags the lead, Coffey put it away with a kill of her own.
In the second stanza, it was Siena's turn to come back from a four-point deficit. The Saints (10-9; 4-3 MAAC) used a late run to pull within 23-22. A block by Peizer and Weaver put set point within reach for the Stags, but a pair of errors allowed Siena to tie it up. After a Saints service error, Moyer came through with a block to give Fairfield the 26-24 win.
Siena had the upper hand in the third set, jumping out to a 15-10 lead. Fairfield later cut the gap to 23-21, thanks in part to five kills from Stapleton, but Siena was able to hang on for the 25-21 victory. The Stags started the fourth set with a 5-1 run but the Saints quickly tied it with a 4-0 run and overtook the Stags 9-6. Fairfield fought back, opening up an 11-9 lead on an ace by Peizer. The Stags never looked back as they rolled to the 25-18 victory.
Fairfield returns to action tomorrow, October 7, against Marist College at 2pm in Alumni Hall.
