Durham, NH – The Fairfield University field hockey travels to Durham, N.H. to begin its America East season against 12th-ranked University of New Hampshire.
With a five-game winning streak intact, the Stags are ready for their conference season to start, looking to build upon the momentum they have built up. Fairfield is off to one of the best starts in school history with a 7-2 overall record. The two goalkeepers have a combined goals against average of a 1.00, the lowest in the America East. Caitlin O'Donnell owns the lowest average at 0.57 and
Maddy Sposito is close behind in the third spot with a 1.27 average. Sposito currently ranks 10th in the nation in goals against average.
Fairfield's defense is one of the strongest in the conference at this point, allowing only nine goals in nine games. Up front,, senior
Marit Westenberg continues to lead the Stags with 13 points, registering five goals and three assists. Freshman
Felicitas Heinen is close behind with nine points including three goals and three assists.
The University of New Hampshire is 8-2 overall going into conference play and is undefeated on its home field. The Wildcats have lost their last two games, coming up short against No. 20 Louisville, 3-1 and No. 14 Northwestern, 5-4. Senior Hayley Raush leads the league in four statistics categories with 34 points, which includes 15 goals and four assists. Junior Emma Erler is another leader with a team-high seven assists.
Last year when the two teams met, New Hampshire edged the Stags 3-1 and outshot Fairfield 14-5. This year's game should provide an interesting match up with Fairfield ranking as the top defensive team in America East and New Hampshire representing one of the top offenses in the conference.
