FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's tennis team faced some tough competition over the weekend at the USTA Men's Invitational. However,
Joe Michalisin was able to come up with a win to tie record holder Ryan Berthod with 141 career victories.
First round singles victories were earned by
Ian Tesmond,
Joe Michalisin,
Reece Breault, and
R.J. Mirabile. Tesmond defeated Princeton's Ben Quazzo coming back after losing the first set 6-7(3), 6-2, 10-8. Tesmond followed up the match with another win against Patrick Chase from Yale in a 6-1, 6-4 match. In the semifinals of his respected bracket, Tesmond dropped to bracket champion, Fairleigh Dickinson's Yuri Grichenko in an extremely tough match 3-6, 6-3, 12-10.
Michalisin earned his record tying win against Saint Francis University's Chris Jimenez 7-5, 2-6, 10-8, but couldn't get past Theodore Marin from Columbia University in the quarterfinals dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision.
Breault and Mirabile made it to the two semifinals of their bracket. Throughout the weekend Breault had a number of close matches but dropped to fellow MAAC opponent Jacob Solly 6-1, 6-3. Mirabile played two very impressive matches over the course of the tournament defeating both Nikolav Afanasiev and Fraser Croad in two sets each to later drop to bracket champ Jacob Laser from Brown.
Freshman
Cameron Amyot also had a good showing after a tough first match against University of Pennsylvania's Kyle Roth. Amyot made his way through the consolation bracket reaching the finals which was never played. On his way to the finals, the Stag faced Fordham's JJ Tauil defeating him 6-0, 6-4 and Lawson Barter taking the match 6-3, 6-0.
Sophomore
Dennis Zlobinsky made it to the finals of his consolation bracket after dropping his first match to Dan Hirschberg from Brown who ended up winning the bracket. In the consolation rounds, Zlobinsky beat both Alex Holland from Army 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 10-3 and Zach Katz from the University of Pennsylvania who retired from injury after losing the first set 6-2.
In the doubles tournament, Tesmond and Zlobinsky paired up to compete in the B doubles bracket with a first round matchup against Fordham University's Mischa Koran and Peder Gram defeating the duo 8-5. In the consolation tournament of bracket D, Amyot and Breault beat Boston College's Jonathan Raude and Joe Davison 9-8.
The Stags return to play on the weekend of October 7 for the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn.
