LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University volleyball team rallied from two sets down to overtake Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Siena College, 3-2 (22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-8, 15-10) this afternoon. With the victory, the Stags improve to 3-1 in conference play and 6-8 overall.
Sophomore
Rachel Romansky and freshman
Camille Coffey each posted double-doubles for the Stags. Romansky finished with 52 assists and 16 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. The setter also posted four kills while tying a career-high with three total blocks. Coffey, meanwhile, tallied her sixth double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs. Junior
Brianna Dixion also finished with 18 kills which included the 800th kill of her career.
The Stags were strong defensively as well, notching 96 digs and 15 total blocks, both season highs. Senior
Lauren Balmert recorded a career-best 22 digs while junior
Kara Reis had 18 digs and freshman
Carsen Mata had 16. Freshman
Caitlin Stapleton finished with five total blocks while senior
Kendal Dirkin and freshman
Lindsay Weaver registered six total blocks apiece. Weaver added 11 kills on .450 hitting and four aces, a career-best, while Dirkin added six kills.
After Siena (3-9; 1-3 MAAC) was victorious in the first two sets, Fairfield put together a strong third stanza. The Stags pushed out to a 17-10 lead when the Saints used a 7-1 run to pull within a point. Late in the frame, Taylor Akana held off set point with a kill and pulled the Saints within 24-23 but Stapleton gave the Stags the win with a kill of her own.
Fairfield carried that momentum into the fourth set where it stopped Siena, 25-8. It was the second time this season in which Fairfield held an opponent to eight points in a non-deciding set. The Stags had a slight 5-4 lead when a kill from Romansky sparked a 13-1 run and allowed Fairfield to even the match at two sets apiece.
In the fifth set, the Stags were once again leading 5-4, when they used a 7-1 run to pull away from the Saints. Fairfield never looked back and went on to the 15-10 win.
Fairfield returns home for six-straight matches beginning with MAAC foe Loyola on October 1 at 2pm in Alumni Hall.
