Men's tennis had a strong showing at Sacred Heart University in the Doubles Festival on Saturday September 10. Fairfield duo
Joe Michalisin and
Ian Tesmond captured the championship in No. 1 doubles.
Michalisin and Tesmond started off by dropping their only match of the day to Quinnipiac's Kwei and Lazerowich whom they would later face again in the finals. The pair was able to adjust as needed throughout the day beating both Sacred Heart's Miller and Sullo (8-3) and Bhalla and Isaacson from Hartford (8-1) in the round robin. Advancing to the No. 1 semifinals, the Stags were up against Queen's partners Toth and Wulff who had not yet lost. Michalisin and Tesmond were their road block as the duo defeated Queens 8-7 in their toughest match of the day and advancing Fairfield to the finals. In the finals, the two matched up against the Quinnipiac pair whom they lost to at the beginning of the day. But the Stags came out strong and defeated the Bobcats 8-2.
All four other pairings from Fairfield University competed in the consolation semi-finals of their respected pools. In his first collegiate tennis outing, freshman
Cameron Amyot doubled with
Bjorn Merinder to capture the semis in Pool B while seniors
Mike Lessing and
Dan Sauter beat Sacred Heart's Miller and Sullo 8-5 in the semi-finals of the consolation round of Pool A.
The men will continue play on their home court September 21 against MAAC opponent Rider University at 2 p.m.
