Shannon Fay snapped the Fairfield University women's soccer team scoring drought with her tally of the year to give the Stags a 1-0 win over visiting Holy Cross in the finale of the Fairfield Women's Soccer Invitational.
The Stags improve to 2-1-2 on the year, and win the tournament title with a 1-0-1 performance on the weekend. The Crusaders, 1-1-0 on the weekend are now 1-4-0 on the year.
Fay netted the decisive tally in the 56th minute of action. Nikki Stanton played a free kick the near sideline across the 18 to the far post, where Fay drove the ball into the back of the net. Fairfield finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots for the game, with a 12-6 edge in shots on goal.
Kelly Boudreau stopped all six saves in earning her fourth consecutive clean sheet for the Stags, and was named the most valuable player of the event. She did not allow a goal in 200 minutes of action in two games this weekend and has not allowed an opponent to score in over 460 consecutive minutes. Stanton and Lauren Reilly were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Holy Cross keeper Carly McCabe made 11 saves on Sunday, after stopping 10 shots on Friday evening, and allowed just one goal on the weekend. She was named to the All-Tournament Team and was joined by teammates Gina Righini and Tricia Giglio.
Syracuse and Central Connecticut played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie in the opening game of the day. Brittany ANghel, Rachel Blum and Tina Romagnuolo earned All-Tournament Team honors for the Orange who played two draws in the tournament and are now 1-2-3 on the season. The Blue Devils, 0-1-1 in the event, were represented by Erin Egan, Julie Lavoie and Rachel Cerrone on the All-Tournament Team, and are now 1-2-2 on the season.
Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, September 18 when it hosts Stony Brook on Lessing Field at 2 p.m.
