The Fairfield University women's soccer team blanked its second consecutive opponent, but couldn't find the back of the net themselves, playing to a scoreless double-overtime draw at the University of Massachusetts. The Stags are now 1-1-1 on the year, while the Minutewomen are 1-0-1.
Fairfield outshot UMass by a 12-11 count, with the Minutewomen holding a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
Jasmin Corniel and
Ashley Small both recorded three shots in the game, and also put one shot apiece on net.
Two-time defending MAAC Defensive Player of the Week,
Kelly Boudreau was up to the task, stopping each of the five UMass shots, with all five saves coming after intermission. It marked her second consecutive clean sheet, and she has allowed just one goal, in three games this season, and in 260:54 of action.
The Stags took half of their shots in the first-half, with four coming in a five minute span late in the period, two of which went high and one wide. The other, off the foot of
Michelle Kowalski with 5:12 before intermission, from a
Nikki Stanton corner, had to be saved by a Minutewoman defender, preserving the tie.
Fairfield had a 6-3 edge in corner kick chances in the game, and committed fewer fouls, 15-8. The Stags were also whistled for a season-high six offside's, compared to five from UMass.
The Stags used 19 players, the least that have seen the field in three games this season, with only three playing over 100 minutes in the contest.
Fairfield is now off until September 9 when it hosts the Fairfield Women's Soccer Invitational. The Stags will play Syracuse at 7:30 pm that evening, following the contest between Central Connecticut and Holy Cross. On Sunday, September 11, Syracuse and CCSU meet at noon, with the Stags and Crusaders wrapping up the event.
