Stags Stopped at FDU

TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team surrendered two second half goals as the FDU Knights took down the Stags 2-0 to finish non-conference play. The Stags out-shot the Knights 19-7 and had a 7-5 margin with shots on target but could not find the back of the net for their second-straight setback.
 
Thirteen of Fairfield's 19 attempts came in the second half while both teams combined for 18 shots in the final 45 minutes.
 
Fairfield had the first four shots of the final half including three in the first four minutes. Charlyse Berry, Kacie Benn, and Ashley McMahon all shot towards goal but could not find the frame.
 
The Knights controlled the pace for a 17-minute span with one shot that hit off the crossbar and another cross that hit the top of the post.
 
Fairfield's best chance came in the 70th minute as Kelly O'Connor sent a chip shot towards the top of the net, forcing a jumping save from the FDU keeper.
 
One minute later, Candela Espana beat the goalkeeper on a free kick to break the scoreless draw.
 
Chasing a goal, the Stags upped the offensive pressure with Amelie Stewart taking a pair of shots, while her attempt in the 80th minute being corralled by the keeper on a short hop.
 
Berry led the Stags with five shots off the bench while the six Fairfield reserves combined for 13 of their shot attempts.
 
The Stags will now turn their attention to conference play, hosting Rider on Saturday at 5pm on Lessing Field.
