O'Brien Announces Addition Of Seven Freshmen To 20

Fairfield University head soccer coach Jim O'Brien announced the addition of seven student-athletes to the Stags incoming freshmen class. Jessica Broadbent (North Haven, Conn.), Michelle Coate (Pembroke, Mass.), Kathleen Early (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Megan O'Brien (West Hartford, Conn.), Emma Pichl (New York, N.Y.), Veronica Saez (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Phoebe Tateronis (North Reading, Mass.) join the Fairfield Class of 2015 and will begin competition with the Stags for the 2011 fall season.

Broadbent is a 5-foot-8 graduate of North Haven High School and will compete for playing time in the back for the Stags. She was a for-year starter in high school, serving as team captain as a senior, and being named team MVP as a sophomore. A member of CFC United, Broadbent also lettered in lacrosse and track during her scholastic career and is a member of the National Honor Society.

“I have significant knowledge of Jessica who resides in my home town of North Haven,” said O'Brien.  “Having watched her grow and develop into a very strong division one prospect, I feel that Jess can have an immediate impact with our program.”

Coate is a 5-foot-8 midfielder that graduated from Pembroke High School as a four-year varsity starter. She led her squad to a Patriot League title as she earned Eastern Mass All-Star, team MVP and All-State accolades. A member of Scorpions Soccer Club, Coate led that team to a state title and a Region 1 Premier League Championship.

“Michelle joins us with a tremendous background as a member of Scorpions Soccer Club, one of the elite youth programs in the nation,” said O'Brien.  “This experience at the highest level will certainly help Michelle challenge at both mid-field and in the back line.”

Early, a 5-foot-8 graduate of Kellenberg Memorial High School, will join the Stags talented stable of goal keepers. A captain her final two seasons, she helped lead the Firebirds to a league championship appearance her senior year. Early plays her club soccer for HBC Intense '92, joining current Stag Shannon Fay.

“Kathleen will be part of the battle in goal, coming from very competitive high school and club programs,” said O'Brien. “Her experience at that level of play will be an invaluable asset for her when she comes to camp in August.”

O'Brien is a 5-foot-9 graduate of Hall High School and will see increased playing time in the back as she continues to develop. A 2009 All-Conference selection, one of her assests is her speed, holding the school record in the 400m run as a member of the track team.. O'Brien plays her club soccer for Connecticut United Football Club and is a member of the National Honor Society.

“ Megan has grown and developed into a top prospect as a hard working, tall, athletic defender who will compete for a spot at any one of the back four,” said Jim O'Brien. “She has a tremendous upside and will continue rapid growth and development in her career with us.”

Pichl, a 5-foot-7 graduate of Notre Dame School, will join the Stags talented defensive group. A four-time NY Daily News All-CHSAA First-Team Selection, she graduated as Notre Dame's all-time leader in goals and assists. Currently a member of the Manhattan Kickers, Pichl is a two-time Super Y-League ODP National Camp selection and led the Brooklyn Knights to the 2009 Super Y-League North American Final.

“I feel that Emma is the sleeper of this class,” said O'Brien.  “Playing at a small club and high school program in Manhattan, we feel that we have produced a hidden gem who will compete in several key areas on the field.”

Saez is a 5-foot-10 graduate of Bainbridge High School and will compete for time in the Stags very talented goal keeper pool. She brings a wealth of experience on her resume to Fairfield, having been the goal keeper for the U17 Chilean National Team in the Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago in 2010.

“Veronica's experience at the international level will take her a long way in her preparation for collegiate soccer,” said O'Brien. “She is our second recruit from the Pacific Northwest, joining fellow Washingtonian Nikki Stanton.”

Tateronis is a 5-foot-1 graduate of Noble and Greenough Academy and is penciled into the midfield entering camp, but could also see time at an outside forward spot as well. A Boston Globe ISL All-Star, she led the Bulldogs to three consecutive New England Championships, as well as a semifinal appearance during her freshman campaign.

“Phoebe is a member of Massachusetts club Scorpions along with fellow rookie, Michelle Coate, and has significant experience playing at a very high level,” said O'Brien. “We expect Phoebe to vie for playing time at either mid-field or as a wide forward depending on our formation”

The 2011 soccer season gets underway on August 7th when the Stags report for preseason training camp.  Fairfield opens the 2011 campaign 14 days later at 2010 national semifinalist Boston College.
