KINGSTON, R.I. -- Freshman
Rae Ball tossed a one-hit shutout in the second game of a doubleheader with the University of Rhode Island, which completed a sweep of the Rams. Fairfield posted a 5-2 victory in the opener behind a complete game effort from
Kelli Panter.
The Stags gave all the run support that Panter would need in the top of the first inning.
Kristen Filicia opened the game with an infield hit and took second on a bobbled throw. She went to third when
Tiffany Lawson placed a sacrifice bunt toward the first base line. Filicia came home when
Lauren Liseth laced a double down the right field line to make the score 1-0. Liseth scored when
Kristina Lingo launched a two-run homer for a 3-0 advantage.
Rhode Island scored its first run in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit, taking advantage of two errors and a sacrifice fly which closed the gap to 3-1. The Stags picked up that run in the top of the sixth after
Mikayla Shumate singled, was sacrificed to second, cross home plate after Filicia's double.
Fairfield gained a four-run lead when Liseth hit a home run to start the seventh inning. Rhode Island was able to scratch across one more run against Panter before the right-hander ended the game by inducing a ground out. Panter scattered seven hits and fanned three hits in picking up her second win of the season.
The second game ended after five innings as the Stags posted an 8-0 victory. After a pair of scoreless innings, Fairfield broke through with three runs in the third inning. Filicia started the rally with a walk, and then took second with a stolen base. An infield hit by Shumate put runners on the corners until Shumate stole second base. Liseth followed the stolen base with a two-run double for a 2-0 lead. Lingo plated the final run with a single that allowed Liseth to touch home plate.
The visitors added two more runs in the fourth inning when
Kimi Kurata doubled and scored on a throwing error later in the inning. Shumate scored the second run after
Alli Wigand drilled an RBI single. Fairfield added three more runs in the fifth frame as Liseth drew a bases-loaded walk and Lingo followed with a two-run single.
Ball picked up the win by allowing one hit, a two-out single by Nicole Massoni. Ball retired the final 13 hitters she faced to record her third win of the season.
