NEW HAVEN, Conn. --
Kristen Filicia had two hits in both ends of a doubleheader as the Stags softball team swept Yale University in a non-conference doubleheader. Fairfield won the first game by an 8-5 count and came back with an 11-3 victory in the nightcap.
The Stags opened the first game by building a 6-0 lead, sparked by a five-run second inning. Yale responded with four runs in the bottom of third inning, and followed up with a run in the fifth inning to make the score 6-5. Fairfield picked up a little cushion by sending home two runs in the top of the seventh to close the scoring.
Kristina Lingo reached base in all four plate appearance, stroking three hits and drawing a base on balls. Two of her three hits were doubles, one of which drove home a run.
Kimi Kurata also enjoyed a solid offense game with a pair of hits and a team-high three RBI. Filicia,
Rae Ball, and
Alli Wigand each recorded an RBI in the game. Meg Johnson paced Bulldogs offense with three hits and three RBI, including a home run.
Kelli Panter earned the victory after pitching four innings, while
Sarah Minice picked up the save after retiring all four batters she faced.
In the second game, the Stags started quickly with a pair of runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded,
Rae Ball singled through the left side for a 1-0 lead.
Rachel Beaudoin followed with a bases-loaded walk to double up the lead at 2-0. The Fairfield advantage to 4-0 in the second inning after
Lauren Liseth posted a two-run homer to left field.
Yale broke through against starting pitcher
Emily Orr with a single run in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs cut the deficit in half with another run in the fourth inning. The Stags held a three-run lead heading into the seventh inning, but broke the game open with five runs.
Kurata, Ball, and
Tiffany Lawson each had an RBI in the inning, while Filicia added two runs with a doublle. Orr went the first four innings to register the win, while Ball tossed the final three inings.
