Men's Tennis Has Strong Outing at Quinnipiac Invit

HAMDEN, Conn.
– The Fairfield University men's tennis team had a strong outing over the course of the weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational hosted in Hamden, Conn.

Sophomore transfer Ian Tesmond and Joe Michalisin both competed in the 'A' singles bracket throughout the weekend.  Tesmond defeated two opponents before dropping in the semifinals to Connecticut's Warden in a close match, 6-2, 2-6, (10-8).  Throughout the day, Tesmond earned victories against Marco Neves from Hartford in a 7-5, 7-5 battle and against Quinnipiac's James Kwei 6-3, 6-3.  Michalisin came up short in his first match of the day against Dana Parziale from Bryant who ended up winning the 'A' singles championship.

In the consolation bracket, Michalisin made his way to the semifinals by defeating Mark Miller from Villanova in an 8-4 match.  In the semis, it was Jacob Miller from Sacred Heart who won by default to advance to the finals.

In the 'B' singles draw, freshman Cameron Amyot started his day off with a victory over Quinnipiac's Corey Morgenstern followed by a tough loss to Boston University's Teran, 4-6, 6-4 (10-3).  Teran went on to win the 'B' singles bracket.  Reece Breault competed in the 'B' draw as well, dropping his first match of the day to a Hartford player 2-6, 6-1 (15-13).  He rebounded with a victory in the consolation bracket against Hartford's Josh Isaacson in an 8-5 match, then dropping to Regis Chang of Boston University in the semifinals 9-8(2).

Both Bjorn Merinder and R.J. Mirabile competed in the 'C' singles bracket.  Both Merinder and Mirabile came up short in their opening round matches against Connecticut's Spreyer and Bryant's Sipala, respectively.  Merinder made his earned victory after victory to make his way to the finals of the 'C' consolation bracket defeating Boston's Bill Kring (9-8(3)) and Sacred Heart's Derrick Crossman (8-2) along the way.  Mirabile dropped his second match of the day to Matt Colonnese from Villanova 8-6.

In the doubles brackets, Michalisin and Tesmond paired up for the 'A' bracket and defeated Boston University's duo of Kopelman and Hallenbeck in the first round 8-2.  The second match of the day they dropped to Quinnipiac pairing Kwei and Weeden, 9-8(2).

There were four Stags who competed in the 'B' doubles bracket, duo Amyot and Merinder were victorious against UCONN's Suronic and Carr but fell in the second round to Nelcon and Bailey from Quinnipiac, 8-4.  The other duo included Lessing and Mirabile who lost their first match to UCONN's Burns and Palmer 9-8(4).  In the consolation bracket, Lessing and Mirable defeated Rubinstein and Cournoyer from Bryant then dropped the semifinal match to Monaldo and Buhonnon from Villanova who took the consolation bracket championship.

With his wins from the Quinnipiac Invitational, Joe Michalisin now becomes the all-time record holder for combined wins at Fairfield University with 143.  He passed '10 graduate Ryan Berthod with his first win of the day against Villanova's Mike Miller in an 8-4 match.  Teammate Dan Sauter has now captured third place on the record holders list for total wins with 130 after his matches at the Columbia Invitational this weekend.

The Stags will next take the courts at the ITA Regionals in Ithaca, N.Y. from October 13 to October 18.
