A pair of second half goals by the NSCAA's sixth-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Harvard University, stymied the Fairfield University women's soccer team in a Tuesday afternoon non-conference match. The 2-1 defeat dropped the Stags to 3-4-3 on the year, while the Crimson improve to 7-4.
The Stags wasted little time in getting on the board as Kasey Schulz knocked home her first goal of the season, 7:54 into the game. Nikki Stanton fed Schulz at the top right of the box for her team leading fourth assist of the season. Kelly Boudreau stopped the two shots Harvard put on net in the first-half and the Stags took the 1-0 lead into intermission.
Harvard tallied the equalizer just less than nine minutes into the second-half as Lindsay Kowal sent a corner kick to the head of Peyton Johnson. Kowal had the assist a dozen minutes later, sending a cross from the right side to the left foot of Meg Hamby-Casscells for the game-winning tally.
Boudreau stopped two other second-half shots, to tally four saves for the game. Cheta Emba started in net for Harvard, making a save and allowing one goal in her half of action. Bethany Kanten stopped two shots and allowing no goals in the second-half to earn the win.
Harvard outshot Fairfield 11-9 for the game, with a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Both teams tallied six shots in the second-half of play. The Crimson finished with a 5-1 edge in corner kicks, four coming in the first-half.
The Stags return to action, and Lessing Field, on Saturday when they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
