Men's Tennis Wraps Up Fall Season With Play at Con

NEW HAVEN, Conn.
– The Fairfield University men's tennis team wrapped up their fall season at the Connecticut State Championships, hosted by Yale University. 

Stag duo Dan Sauter and Dennis Zlobinsky matched well together as they progressed to the semifinal of the doubles tournament.  In their first match of the day, the two defeated Lin and Surovic of UConn 8-3, followed with a second round victory over Quinnipiac's Kwei and Lazerowich, 9-7.  With that win, the pair advanced to the quarters where they edged Yale's Chase and Faierman in an 8-6 match, moving on to face another Yale team Samaha/Huang who defeated the Stags in the top half final 8-3 to go on and win the doubles tournament.

Joe Michalisin and Erik Kremheller also performed well over the weekend.  Starting off the bottom half of the doubles bracket with a bye, the Stags matched up against UConn's Carr and Cardona and defeated the Huskies 8-4.  Fairfield advanced from the quarterfinals to the semis after an 8-2 match against Quinnipiac's Weeden and Ambrosio.  The Stags battled with Yale's Dean and Dawson in the final of the bottom half, but came out on the losing end of a 9-8 match.

Fairfield's Ian Tesmond and Cameron Amyot made their way through the top half of the doubles tournament before dropping to the Yale team of Samaha and Huang who won the tournament.  In their first match of the day, Quinnipiac's Petrini and Nelson fell to the pairing 8-4.  Sacred Heart's Sullo and Miller then dropped to Tesmond and Amyot 8-1 in the round of 16.

In the Singles tournament, three Stags made it to the round of 16, Zlobinsky, Amyot, and Sauter.  Zlobinsky, who had a first round bye, defeated Corey Morganstern in the second round 7-5, 6-1 before dropping to Yale's Krumholz 6-3, 6-4.  Amyot went 2-1 in the singles draw, defeating JC Petrini of Quinnipiac 6-3, 6-3 and Tommy Ratchford from Yale 7-6, 6-2.  In the round of 16, the Stag dropped to Yale's Patrick Chase 6-0, 7-6.  Fairfield's Sauter was 1-1 with a first round bye earning a singles victory against UConn's Margules edging him 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 followed by a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Yale's Blumenkranz.

In the singles consolation bracket, Tesmond advanced to the bottom half semis by earning victories against two UConn players, Surovic (6-1, 6-0) and Yoon (6-3, 6-4).

Bjorn Merinder won his first singles match against Sacred Heart's John Lopresti 6-4, 6-1 before dropping his second round match to James Kwei of Quinnipiac.  Paired up with Mike Lessing in the doubles tournament, the pair dropped to Dean and Dawson from Yale who went on to win the bottom half of the doubles bracket.  In the consolation division, the two Stags defeated Bagi and Lopresti of Sacred Heart 8-2 before dropping to Yale's Ratchford and Krumholz 8-6.

Sophomore R.J. Mirabile went 1-4 during the tournament defeating Sacred Heart's Lopresti 6-1, 6-2 before dropping in the consolation quarterfinals to Hartford's Kennelly 6-1, 6-0.  Reece Breault also went 1-4 during the tournament including singles and doubles, with his straight set, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Floum from Hartford.
