Box Score

HANOVER, NH - The Fairfield University field hockey team earned its first win of the seasonwith a 2-1 victory over Missouri State at the Big Green Classic. The Stags doubled their total shots from yesterday's game with 22. The defense dominated the game holding the Bears to just three shots which all came in the first half. In addition, the Stags had a total of seven corners, six more than their opponent.

Missouri State started the scoring off about eight minutes into the first half, but that would be it as the Stags came back with two goals in the second half to take the win. Anne Nieuwenhuistied the game when she tipped in a shot off a pass from Leah Furey with 17 minutes remaining in regulation.

Amanda Sullivan sealed the victory as she tipped in Melanie Leo's shot off a corner. Leo took an initial shot at the top of the circle. With a lot of traffic in front of the goal, Sullivan put her stick on the ball and deflected a shot past the goalkeeper.

The Stags didn't back down offensively as their pressure forced 13 saves by Missouri State's goalkeeper Steph Anderson. This win increases the Stags previous 1-1 series record with the Bears to a winning mark while improving 1-3 on the season.

The Stags have their home opener September 8 when they host Lehigh at 4pm.
