The Fairfield University women' soccer team heads on the road for a pair of games – wrapping up the road portion of its non-conference schedule and kicking off Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The Stags will travel to New Jersey tonight for a 7 p.m. contest versus Ivy League member Princeton University, before heading to New Rochelle, N.Y. on Friday for the league opener at Iona College.
The meeting with the Tigers marks the third consecutive season the two teams have met, and the fourth-time overall, with Princeton winning each of the meetings, by a combined 6-0 scored. The last two meetings, 2008 in New Jersey and 2009 at Fairfield, have both been 1-0 Tiger victories, while the first-ever meeting, 2001, was a 4-0 win by Princeton.
Fairfield and Iona are meeting for the 20
th time, with the Stags holding a 14-2-3 series record. Under sixth-year head coach
Jim O'Brien, the Stags are 3-1-2 against the Gaels, wining each of the team's last two meetings, by a combined score of 5-0. The two teams first met in 1992, playing to a 0-0 draw, before the Stags rattled off 11 consecutive wins in the series. Iona won the regular season meetings in both 2004 (1-0) and 2005 (3-0), but the Stags earned a measure of revenge with a 1-0 double-overtime win in the 2005 MAAC Championship quarterfinal.
Fairfield is 15-2-1 in its first MAAC game of the season all-time, having won the conference opener in each of the last three seasons. The Gaels have been the Stags opponent in the MAAC season debut in five of those 18 campaigns, with Fairfield going 3-1-1 in those games. Now in its 19th season in the MAAC, Fairfield boasts a 124-36-19 MAAC record – with a winning all-time record against eight of the league's nine other members.
Kelly Boudreau (Farmington, Conn.), the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, posted her fifth shutout of the year, and the 20
th of her career, in the Stags double-overtime tie with Hartford in the team's last outing. She is only the fourth Stag keeper in program history to reach 20 career clean sheets and is tied with Fairfield University Alumni Association Hall of Famer Christen Veach (1993-96) for third on the all-time list. Brett Maron (2004-07) is second on the list with 24 career blankings, while Anne Lyons (1997-2000) currently holds down the top spot with 24.5 shutouts.
A junior, Boudreau is second in the MAAC with an .869 save percentage and a goals against average of 0.87. She has made 53 saves, 5.89 per game, which are both also good for second place in the conference heading into this week's games. Boudreau set a personal mark with 104 saves a season ago, and is on pace to challenge that total, and the single-season school record of 128 (Anne Lyons-1997), this season.
On the offensive side Fairfield continues to look to recapture the three-goal effort of its win over Stony Brook on September 16. In the two games since, 200 minutes, Fairfield has not scored a goal, falling 1-0 to Army and tying Hartford. The Stags did up the offensive pressure against the Hawks, finishing the game with 15 corner kicks, while putting 6-15 shots on net.
Fairfield's offense has been well balanced this season, with seven different players accounting for the team's eight goals. Freshman
Jac Ley (Marine, Minn.) tallied two goals – both against Stony Brook – and is the only Stag with more than one tally this season. She is currently tied for the team lead with four points, joined in that spot by classmate
Shannon Fay (Sayville, N.Y.) Fay has a goal and two assists this season, one of seven Stags to be credited with an assist on the year.
