FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's cross country team captured the 34th installment of the Fr. Victor F. Leeber, S.J. Invitational while the women's cross country team placed third this afternoon on a hot and humid day on the North Benson Road campus.
The Stags' victory was the first for Fairfield at the event since 2002. Senior Benjamin Heslin (Kensington, Conn.) was the runner-up in the men's 8K with a time of 27:02.76 while freshman Howie Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.J.) was third with a time of 27:10.51. Junior Kristen Golen (Malvern, Pa.) was Fairfield's top-finisher in the women's 5K, clocking a time of 19:53.84 to finish ninth overall.
There was a total of four Stags in the top-ten in the men's race. Freshman John Lobo (Baltimore, Md.) placed fifth with a time of 27:14.36 while junior Matt Brunelle (Oakham, Mass.) was tenth with a time of 27:27.64. Rounding out Fairfield's top-seven were sophomore Kyle Short (Scottsdale, Ariz.) in 27:40.78 (15th), freshman Brian Cleary (Ridgewood, N.J.) in 27:59.40 (18th) and junior Vin Ferrer (Belford, N.J.) in 28:10.93 (21st).
Sophomore Dylan Fisher (Peterborough, N.H.) had a time of 29:25.10 and was followed by sophomore Ernie Lustenring (Massapequa, N.Y.) in 30:31.96, freshman Zack Albert (Plantsville, Conn.) in 31:06.51, and senior Jeff Paul (Schenectady, N.Y.) in 31:24.00.
On the women's side, sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Tampa, Fla.) placed 14th overall with a time of 20:13.40. Junior Caroline Riley (Mystic, Conn.) had a time of 20:19.41 to place 17th overall.Rounding out the Stags' top-seven were junior Kelly Kramer (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) in 20:34.02, junior Lauren Londregan (Old Lyme, Conn.) in 20:35.24, Samantha Goodnow (Deerfield, N.H.) in 20:54.48, and Lauren Tehan (Portland, Ore.) in 20:55.91.
Junior Emily Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished in 21:04.05 and was followed by freshman Molly Leidig (Landenberg, Pa.) in 21:07.96, junior Nikki Livesey (Livingston, N.J.) in 21:50.01, freshman Hillary Maxson (Saybrook, Conn.) in 22:08.05, freshman Lindsey Russo (Norwalk, Conn.) in 22:56.87, and sophomore Elizabeth Butrick (Torrington, Conn.) in 23:05.13.
Manhattan College's Tobias Lundgren was the men's individual champion, finishing in 26:19.43. Fairfield placed first with 32 points, Sacred Heart University was the runner up with 45 points. Fordham University was third followed by Manhattan College, Marist College, John Carroll University, University of New Haven, and the University of Bridgeport.
Sacred Heart's Kimberly DeLoreto repeated was the women's individual champion, finishing in 18:29.06. Sacred Heart also repeated as the team champion, finishing with 29 points. Marist was the runner-up with 41 while Fairfield in third with 89. Manhattan was fourth and was followed by John Carroll, Fordham, New Haven, and Bridgeport.
Fairfield returns to action on October 1 at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
