Spenser Allaway scored the game-winning goal in her first action of the season and Jac Ley tallied the first two goals of her collegiate career as the Fairfield University women's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win at Stony Brook University on Thursday night. In a game delayed nearly 90 minutes due to severe weather, the Stags withstood a furious first-half offensive flurry from the Seawolves to improve to 4-3-0 on the season.
Kelly Boudreau made five of her eight saves during the first-half, to deny Stony Brook, despite the Seawolves out shooting the Stags 9-1 in the period. The clean sheet is the fourth of the year for Boudreau, who moved to within one career shutout of tying Christen Veach (1993-96) for third on the Stags all-time list, and within six shutouts of the school record. Her Stony Brook counterpart, Chelsea Morales, made five saves in playing the entire 90 minutes.
Spenser Allaway, who made her first appearance of the year after a preseason injury, gave the Stags the lead midway through the second-half. Shannon Fay and Elise Hemmer were credited with their first career assists on the goal, which came with 23:58 to play in the contest.
Fay recorded her second assist of the night on the Stags second goal, with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation. Jasmin Corniel and Fay combined to put the ball to the foot of Jac Ley for her first career goal, and a 2-0 Stags advantage. Ley added her second tally with nine seconds remaining as she recovered a rebound from a Corniel shot, for the final margin.
The Stags will return to action at home on Sunday when they host Army at 1 p.m. The Black Knights, ranked seventh in this week's Mid-Atlantic Region Poll, are 6-2-0 on the year had their six-game shutout streak snapped on Wednesday by Brown, 2-1, in overtime. The game is the Military Appreciation Day and Take a Kid to the Game Day. All active military and their families will be admitted free with a military ID, while all children under 12 are also admitted free with the purchase of an adult ticket.
