The Fairfield University women's soccer team defeated visiting Binghamton University 2-0 in its 2010 home opener on Lessing Field Friday night. The victory improves the Stags to 2-0, their best start to a season since 2001, while the Bearcats fall to 0-1.
Fairfield goalkeeper Kelly Boudreau (Farmington, Conn.) posted her second consecutive clean sheet to start the season, stopping both shots that Binghamton put on goal. She also tallied the assist on the Stags first goal of the game. Boudreau knocked a goal kick down the left side of the field to Kasey Schulz (Newtown, Conn.), who proceeded to drill the ball into the upper corner of near post, for what would prove to be the game-winning goal, in the 39th minute. It is the first assist of Boudreau's career, and the second game-winning goal for Schulz.
Fairfield netted an insurance goal in the 66th minute when Sarah Alesio (West Windsor, N.J.) put a free kick to the head of Nicole Cavallaro (New Hyde Park, N.Y.), who put it past the Bearcats keeper, Carrie Martin. Martin finished with three saves, and the two goals allowed, in playing the entire 90 minutes.
The Stags are now 5-0-1 in home opening games under sixth-year head coach Jim O'Brien, and extended their home opening unbeaten streak to eight years.
It is only the second time in the 19-year varsity history of the Stags, that Fairfield has blanked its first two opponents on the year, having shutout Bryant 1-0 in the opener last Sunday. The only other time it has occurred was in 1992, the program's first varsity campaign, when the Stags shutout Manhattan (3-0) and Siena (5-0) to begin the year.
Fairfield finished the contest with a one-shot advantage, 10-9, over Binghamton, but had a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Stags also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, and committed four fewer fouls, 14-10.
The Stags are back in action on Saturday, September 4, when they take on American University in the first game of the D.C. Invitational. The 2:30 p.m. game will be played at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. Fairfield will play the host Hoyas on Monday at noon, before returning home on September 10 to host Boston College on Lessing Field.
