The Fairfield University women's soccer team opened the 2010 campaign with a 1-0 victory over host Bryant University on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Smithfield, R.I. The Stags are 1-0 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-1.
Despite missing two starters for the game, Fairfield controlled play throughout the contest, holding a 13-5 advantage in total shot, and 6-1 edge in shots on goal. The Stags earned seven corner kicks on the game, while not relinquishing a single corner to the Bulldogs. Both teams committed 11 fouls in the contest.
The Stags out shot Bryant 6-1 in the first-half of play, but despite putting three shots on net, the game was scoreless at intermission. The score remained 0-0 through the first third of the second-half, until
Jasmin Corniel, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, tallied the first goal of the season.
An aggressive tackle by
Alyssa Decker just inside the Stags defensive half of the field, put the ball to the foot of redshirt freshman
Nikki Stanton. Playing in her first collegiate game, Stanton played the ball down the right flank to the streaking Corniel, who put the ball past the keeper.
Kelly Boudreau faced only one shot on goal on the afternoon, and stopped that shot, to record the 16
th clean sheet of her career.
The season opening victory snaps a two-game losing streak in season debuts, with the last season opener coming over Air Force, 2-0, in 2007.
The Stags host Binghamton on Friday, August 27 on Lessing Field for the squad's home opener.
