MADISON, Conn. –
The Fairfield University men's and women's cross country teams had a solid day of competition at the 2010 NCAA Northeast Regional at Hammonasset Beach State Park. Fairfield and Yale University co-hosted the event.
 
Freshman Howie Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.J.) was Fairfield's top-finisher in the men's 10K while junior Caroline Riley (Mystic, Conn.) was the first Stag across the line in the women's 6K. Rosas clocked a time of 33:19.5 in his first NCAA Regional. Riley, meanwhile, posted a time of 23:13.6.
 
For the men, senior Benjamin Heslin (Kensington, Conn.) posted a time of 33:54.4 while junior Matt Brunelle (Oakham, Mass.) was next in 34:04.1. Freshman John Lobo (Baltimore, Md.) had a time of 34:12.3 and sophomore Kyle Short (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished in 34:14.8 to round out the top –five. Junior Vin Ferrer (Belford, N.J.) clocked a time of 34:48.0 while sophomore Greg Chase (Bristol, Conn.) finished in 34:54.6. The Stags placed 33rd as a team.
 
On the women's side, sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Tampa, Fla.) had a time of 23:16.6 in her first NCAA Regional. Samantha Goodnow (Deerfield, N.H.) clocked a time of 23:31.1 and was followed by juniors Lauren Tehan (Portland, Ore.) and Kristen Golen (Malvern, Pa.), in 23:55.7 and 24:13.1, respectively. Junior Emily Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished in a time of 24:39.5 while junior Lauren Londregan (Old Lyme, Conn.) rounded out the Stags competitors in 24:45.7. The Stags placed 32nd as a team.
 
Syracuse University won both the men's and women's team competition. On the women's side, the Orange collected 78 points while Stony Brook University was the runner-up with 83 points and Providence College was third with 87 points. Stony Brook's Van Dalen sisters finished in first and second places in the individual race. Lucy Van Dalen was the champion in a time of 19:38.4 while Holly Van Dalen was the runner-up in 19:42.0. Syracuse won the men's title with 56 points while Iona was second with 63 and Providence was third with 113 points. Iona's Leonard Korir blew away the competition, finishing in a time of 29:36.9.
 
Fairfield closes out its 2010 campaign next Saturday at the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park.
