Women's Soccer Hosts Harvard, Manhattan & Saint Pe

The coming week is a busy one for the Fairfield University women's soccer team wraps up non-conference play and begins the home portion of its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule. The Stags will host Harvard on Tuesday at 6 p.m., Manhattan, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saint Peter's Sunday at 1 p.m. The Stags are 4-5-2 overall on the year, 0-0-1 in MAAC play, and are looking to snap a four-game winless streak.
“This is a big week for us on the field, but perhaps even more importantly, off of the field,” said Stags head coach Jim O'Brien. “To be in the position to help those that are in need, and to contribute in the fight against a disease that affects nearly everyone, is a wonderful feeling, and I am glad that we are able to do so.”
The Stags MAAC game against Saint Peter's on Sunday will be 'Kick for the Cure' as the team joins the fight against breast cancer by bringing awareness of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For every ticket sold to that game Fairfield will contribute $1 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. In addition, there will be breast cancer awareness material at the game, and fans are encouraged to make additional donations.
Fairfield will be wearing custom pink jerseys for that night's contest. Following the game, jerseys will be available for purchase, with proceeds also being donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Friday night's game versus Manhattan is a Fairfield Friday, with all fans that wear Fairfield apparel or red receiving $1 admission to the game. The Stags will be collecting new and gently used books for Read To Grow, Inc. that evening and any fan and any fan that donates a book, appropriate for children from birth to middle school, will receive free admission to the game.
The Tuesday evening game versus Harvard marks the Stags final non-conference game of the season. A win over the Crimson would give Fairfield a .500 non-conference record for the year. All fans wearing Fairfield apparel, or red, will receive two tickets for the price of one, while al high school players will receive free admission to the game. Team rosters must be sent in advance, on school letterhead, to Helen Smaldone either by fax (203-254-4270) or email.
Fairfield and Harvard are meeting for the seventh time in the history of the programs, with the Stags looking for their first victory. The Crimson, who lead the series 4-0-2, defeated the Stags 4-1 in last year's meeting, in Cambridge. The two teams last met on Lessing Field during the 2008 season, playing to a 0-0 double-overtime draw. The first meeting of the series, at Harvard, in 1994, also ended in a draw, 2-2. The Stags goal in last year's contest was the first goal against Harvard since the initial meeting, having gone scoreless in four consecutive games (8-0)..
Fairfield turns its attention back to MAAC play beginning this weekend, hosting the Jaspers in the 22nd meeting between the two teams. The Stags hold a commanding 18-1-2 record in the series with the two squads playing to a 1-1 draw last season in Riverdale, N.Y. Fairfield is 4-0-1 against the Jaspers under O'Brien's direction.
The Stags hold an equally impressive advantage over the Peahens, 18-0-1, as the teams meet for the 20th time since 1992. In the last five meetings the Stags have outscored Saint Peter's 22-1, with back-to-back shutouts in the last two meetings. Fairfield is 9-0-0 against Saint Peter's at home, allowing just three goals in those games and posting shutouts in each of the last five home games in the series – last allowing a Peahen goal on campus in 1998. The series has seen Fairfield post 13 shutouts and allow just seven goals all-time.
Kelly Boudreau posted her sixth shutout of the season on Friday at Iona, and moved into third place alone on the Stags career list with 21. She is now just 3.5 shutouts shy of Anne Lyons (1997-2000) school record of 24.5 career blankings. Boudreau also became only the second keeper in program history to post six or more clean sheets in three consecutive seasons while at Fairfield. Boudreau enters the week ranked first in the MAAC in save percentage (.877), total saves (71), saves per game (6.5) and shutouts (6), while ranking second in the league with a 0.88 GAA.
Since scoring three times against Stony Brook on September 16, the Fairfield offense has fallen dormant. In 400 minutes of action in that time the Stags have been held scoreless by its foes, and played a pair of scoreless double-overtime contests. The four consecutive scoreless games is the most for the Stags in program history.
