Westenberg's Hat Trick Pushes Field Hockey Past Sa

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team enjoyed another strong offensive showing on Sunday afternoon, as the Stags posted a 4-1 win over Saint Joseph's University at University Field. It marked the third time in 12 games that the team has tallied at least four goals.

This time, Marit Westenberg played a role in all four Fairfield goals, hitting the back of the net three times and assisting on the final score. The junior gave the Stags their first lead of the day when she collected a rebound off an initial save by Kelly Swanick. Westenberg one-timed the loose ball past the Hawks defense to give the home team a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game.

Saint Joseph's tied the game 10 minutes later off a solid play which was started by Ellen Rowe. She sent a pass from the left side of the box which Nicole McCreight tipped in near the far post, making the score 1-1.

Westenberg regained the lead for good for the Stags, accepting a long pass from Nikki McLucas about 30 yards from goal. She carried the ball into the circle, juked her defender to create open space, and backhanded a shot past Swanick for a 2-1 edge, a lead in which carried them over to the second half.

Saint Joseph's started the second half with offensive pressure that resulted a quick flurry of shots. However, goalkeeper Maddy Sposito was equal to the challenge and made two saves to keep it a one-goal game. Sposito would enjoy her best game as a Stag, making eight second-half saves and finishing with 11 stops.

Westenberg gave her teammates a two-goal lead on the team's first shot of the half, which came seven minutes into the half. Melanie Leo started the play with a restart off a penalty corner. The ball landed on the stick of Westenberg, who hit a quick shot that caught the corner of the goal.

The game was put out of reach with just under 10 minutes left in the game, courtesy of Amanda Sullivan and Westenberg. Westenberg carried the ball down the near sideline before cutting into the left side of the circle. She sent a cross to the center of the circle, which Sullivan dove with her stick extended and redirected the ball into the goal for a 4-1 advantage.

The Stags return to action on October 9 when they head to Boston University for an America East game. The team hosts Georgetown on October 10 with the game time slated for 2 pm.
