MADISON, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's cross country team placed fourth while the women's team finished fifth at the 2010 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships at Hammonasset Beach State Park.
Freshman
Howie Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.J.) was the first Stag across the line in the men's 8K, clocking a time of 26:01.9 to place 25th overall. In the women's 6K, sophomore
Meghan Sullivan (Tampa, Fla.) was Fairfield's top-finisher, registering a time of 22:55.6 to place 25th overall.
The men's team moved up one spot from last season and posted their highest finish since 1997 when the Stags placed third that year. The women's team also moved up one spot from last season and finished fifth for the first time since 1994.
Iona College repeated as MAAC Champions on both the men's and women's side. In the men's race, Iona finished with 18 points followed by Marist College (53), Rider University (115), and Fairfield (130). Iona's Leonard Korir won the men's event in a time of 23:50.4. In the women's race, Iona placed first with 21 points followed by Canisius College (58), Loyola University (71), Marist (106), and Fairfield (156). Iona's Heidi Gregson won the event in a time of 21:02.5.
For the Fairfield men, sophomore
Kyle Short (Scottsdale, Ariz.) placed 30th overall with a time 26:17.5 while junior
Vin Ferrer (Belford, N.J.) was 34th with a time of 26:20.2.Junior
Matt Brunelle (Oakham, Mass.) finished in a time of 26:23.8 and was followed by freshman
John Lobo (Baltimore, Md.) in 26:27.6, and sophomore
Greg Chase (Bristol, Conn.) in 26:44.9 to round out the top-six.
In their final MAAC Championship, senior
Benjamin Heslin (Kensington, Conn.) clocked a time of 27:24.8 while senior
Jeff Paul (Schenectady, N.Y.) registered a time of 30:01.0. Freshman
Brian Cleary (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted a time of 27:09.0 while sophomore
Ernie Lustenring (Massapequa, N.Y.) had a time of 27:22.0. Freshman
Zack Albert (Plantsville, Conn.) finished in 27:56.0 while sophomore
Dylan Fisher (Peterborough, N.H.) ran a time of 28:20.2.
For the women's team, junior Kristen Golen (Malvern, Pa.) placed 33rd overall with a time of 23:10.3 while classmate Lauren Tehan (Portland, Ore.) was right on her heels finishing 34th in 23:12.6. Junior Caroline Riley (Mystic, Conn.) posted a time of 23:16.8 while junior Samantha Goodnow (Deerfield, N.H.) had a time of 23:26.0. Rounding out the top-six was junior Lauren Londregan (Old Lyme, Conn.) who finished in 24:01.3.
Freshman Danica Ceballos (Upland, Calif.) posted a time of 24:15.2 and was followed by freshman Molly Leidig (Landenberg, Pa.) in 24:44.9, junior Emily Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) in 24:51.0, junior Nikki Livesey (Livingston, N.J.) in 24:52.9, freshman Hillary Maxson (Saybrook, Conn.) in 25:03.9, sophomore Elizabeth Butrick (Torrington, Conn.) 26:23.3
At the post-race awards banquet held on the campus of Fairfield University, 16 Stags received MAAC All-Academic Honors.
Matt Boley (Kendall Park, N.J.), Brunelle, Chase, Ferrer,
Steve Flanagan (Ramsey, N.J.), Heslin, and Short received the award for the men's team while Butrick, Davis,
Kerry Hamilton (West Islip, N.Y.), Kelly Kramer (Massapequa, N.J.) Livesey, Londregan, Riley, Sullivan, and Tehan earned the honors for the women.
Fairfield returns to action on November 13 when they co-host the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regional Hammonasset Beach State Park.
