The Fairfield University women's soccer team heads out on the road for the final time of the 2010 regular season with a single-task in mind – qualify for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. Victories in both games this weekend – Friday at Siena and Sunday at Marist – would accomplish that goal for the Stags, who enter the weekend at 8-7-2 overall and 4-2-1 in league play.
The Stags kept their postseason hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Niagara at home on Senior Day, but still have work to do. A victory over Siena would eliminate the Saints from postseason play, but not ensure a Fairfield berth. That would be accomplished with a win over Marist on Sunday or a loss by Loyola to Rider on Saturday. The Stags can also earn a tournament berth with a win over Siena and a loss by Niagara in either of its home contests versus Manhattan and Saint Peter's this weekend.
Fairfield has had 10 different players touch net this season, totaling 19 goals. Leading the way are
Jasmin Corniel and
Shannon Fay who have both touched net three times on the year. Corniel, a junior, is the team's leading point scorer this season as well, having handed out a team leading three assists, for nine points. The Stags have spread out the assists as well, with 10 different players recording at least one of the team's 15 assists entering the weekend. All told 15 different players have tallied at least one of the Stags 34 goals and assists on the year.
On the defensive side of the ball junior keeper
Kelly Boudreau has received most of the attention, recording 10 clean sheets this fall. A single-season personal best, Boudreau became the program's career shutout leader on Sunday, posting the 25
th shutout of her career. She has stopped 103 shots on the year, and her next save equals her personal best single-season total. Boudreau boasts a .866 save percentage and impressive 0.92 GAA entering the final weekend of the regular season.
Much less heralded, but with much to do with the 25 clean sheets over the past three seasons is Boudreau's classmate and Stags center back
Alyssa Decker. Decker has been a stalwart in the back line in front of Boudreau since the first day of training camp in 2008 and has played a large role in the shutout record.
Also in the back is fifth-year senior
Casey Frobey who with a start against Siena will tie the school record for career starts – at 82. She moves into the tie with Robyn Decker (2005-08), who also holds the program record for appearances at 84.
Fairfield and Siena are meeting for the 21st time in the history of the program's; with the Stags holding a 12-5-3 advantage in the series. The last time the two teams met in Loudonville, Boudreau made a stop of a Saint PK attempt as Fairfield earned a 5-4 PK advantage to advance to – and win – the 2008 MAAC Championship. The Stags are 5-3-2 in games played in Loudonville, N.Y.
Fairfield and Marist will be meeting for the 16
th time in program history, with the Stags posting a 10-2-3 record against the Red Foxes. The Stags are 5-0-1 against Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with the last meeting ending in a 1-0 Stag victory as
Nicole Cavallaro tucked home an overtime goal.
