Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Senior Day Win Over Niaga

Box Score
The Fairfield University women's soccer team kept is Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship hopes alive on Sunday afternoon, defeating visiting conference foe Niagara University 1-0. The win improves the Stags to 8-7-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play, while the Purple Eagles drop to 9-5-1 on the season and 4-3-0 in league play.
On Senior Day, it was a pair of juniors and a freshman that shown for Fairfield as Jasmin Corniel (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored her second game-winning tally of the year and Kelly Boudreau (Farmington, Conn.) became the program's all-time shutout leader. Boudreau passed Anne Lyons (1997-2000) for the career shutout mark by posting the 25th of her career.
Boudreau, and Niagara keeper Ashleigh Bowers (Liverpool, N.Y.) both put in impressive efforts on the afternoon – finishing with eight saves apiece. With just over 20 minutes to play in regulation, Boudreau tipped an Adrianna Gallo (Niagara Falls, Ontario) over the crossbar. The ensuing Niagara corner kick led to a free ball in the box that Boudreau controlled to keep the game scoreless. Just over 10 minutes later Bowers made an impressive save on a breakaway opportunity for Corniel. A long pass sprung the Stags junior down the far side, but Bowers was able to make a diving stop at the post.
Moments later the Stags were able to tally the game-winner. A throw-in from directly in front of the Stags bench wound up on the foot of Sarah Frassetto (Trumbull, Conn.), who dribbled the ball towards the center of the field. She then played the ball along the top of the six to Corniel, who shot the ball back towards the near side and in for the decisive tally.
Boudreau, who posted her 10th clean sheet of the year, was tested quickly after the restart, coming off her line to snag a free ball in the box, before a Niagara attacking player could get a foot on it. The Purple Eagles maintained pressure in the closing minutes, but the Fairfield defense did not allow a shot, preserving the victory.
Fairfield completes the regular season with a pair of road games – travelling to Siena College on Friday afternoon and Marist College on Sunday afternoon. Victories in both of those games would ensure the Stags a berth in the November 5-7 MAAC Championship which will be played at Loyola University Maryland.
