The Fairfield University women's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Canisius College Friday night on Lessing Field. The result evens the Stags overall record at 7-7-2 and drops the team to 3-2-1 in league play, while the Griffs improve to 10-6-0 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play.
The Stags controlled play in the opening minutes of the game, taking five of the first six shots, with four being on net, but were unable to convert for a goal. Canisius goal keeper Lesley Ivinac stopped the first four shots the Stags took in the game, on her way to making nine saves in the contest.
Canisius tallied the first goal of the game with a tally by Kelly Reinwald at 28:03. As the Griffs countered a Stags offensive chance, the ball made its way to Jenny Griffin, who fed the ball long into the near side, where Reinwald won a challenge and put the ball in the back of the net. The score remained 1-0 at intermission and Fairfield had a chance off of the restart in the second-half that Ivinac stopped to preserve the lead. The Griffs would take a 2-0 lead at 51:42 as Griffin and Reinwald fed Brianna Smith for a shot that caromed off the hands of Fairfield keeper
Kelly Boudreau.
The Stags answered quickly, as
Carly Beyar chipped a shot into the top corner of the net 19 seconds later to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Griffin would tally the game-winning goal at 63:25, putting home passes from Reinwald and Kasey Makowski for the 3-1 lead. Fairfield would strike again, in the 77
th minute, when
Jasmin Corniel lofted the ball from the far side, across the box, to the head of
Shannon Fay, who put the ball over the hands of Ivinac into the upper corner.
Canisius tallied an insurance goal with just over seven minutes to play in the game. The Stags attempted to clear the ball from the corner where the Griffs where playing the ball, but the clearance was deflected to Brianna Smith, who spun and put the ball inside the far post, for the final tally.
The Stags finished the game with a 26-13 advantage in shots, and had an 11-9 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had three corner kick chances in the game, and the Stags committed two additional fouls, 8-6.
Fairfield returns to action on Sunday, Octobe24 when it hosts Niagara University at 1 p.m. on Lessing Field. Seniors
