Field Hockey Tops Georgetown, 3-2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield field hockey team returned to University Field this afternoon to take on Georgetown University Hoyas.

The Stags didn't waste any time getting on the board this afternoon as senior Amanda Sullivan (Somers, N.Y.) scored 30 seconds into the game. Sullivan put one past Georgetown goalie Briana Pereira off a cross from junior forward Marit Westenberg (The Hague, Netherlands).

The Hoyas evened the score off the first penalty corner of the game. Catherine Shugrue finished the pass from Annika Bannon from the penalty corner that was taken by Sofia Pifer. Pifer and Bannon were both credited with the assist. Marit Westenberg put the Stags back on top by finishing her shot unassisted into the bottom right corner off a breakaway at the 28:20 mark. Fairfield held the 2-1 advantage at the end of the first half.
Freshman Christy Starsinic (Hummelstown, Pa.) increased the Stags' lead to 3-1 in the second half as she finished a cross from Jill Keeney (Springfield, Pa.). The game winning tally not only marked Starsinic's first career goal as a Stag, but also Keeney's first career point.
Georgetown kept up the pressure offensively putting one past goalkeeper Maddy Sposito at the 65:17 mark as Charlotte Tierney completed a cross from Annie Wilson who dribbled through traffic to make the pass.

Maddy Sposito (Ridgefield, Conn.) had another solid performance in goal making five saves, including four in the second half on Georgetown's 10 shots. Fairfield edged the Hoyas in penalty corners, 6-3, as well as shots 12-10.

The Stags now 8-6 overall, continue play next weekend at University Field against visiting California on October 15. The game time is set for 4pm.
