The Stags last played an overtime game in the MAAC season opener in 2008, defeating Rider 2-1 at home. Iona was the opponent in 2006 the only prior MAAC opening game that ended in a tie, also 0-0. Fairfield and Iona played overtime in the 2000 league opener, with the Stags getting a goal in the extra time for a 2-1 victory.
The Stags are back in action next week with three home games. The week begins on Tuesday for Fairfield as it hosts Harvard at 6 p.m. in its non-conference finale. The MAAC home opener will pit the Stags against Manhattan on Friday at 7 p.m. That night any fan that donates a new or gently used book appropriate for a child from birth to middle school will get free admission to the game. The books will be donated to Read to Grow, Inc.
Sunday the Stags will host MAAC foe Saint Peter's and 'Kick for the Cure'. Fairfield will be wearing pink uniforms for that game as it helps raise awareness of breast cancer and raises money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure($). Uniforms will be available for auction with the proceeds – as well as $1 from each ticket – will be donated to Komen.
